Every human being wishes to spend a peaceful and serene life in this world and to make it possible, he goes to lengths by working day and night tirelessly, while also establishing this routine as the standard for success and failure in life. Today, excessive material development has made all the bodily relaxation very convenient for one to achieve, but what we often do not realize, is that it has also deprived the human being of the spirituality and internal peace which is in fact the most essential component needed for the overall well-being of a person. Thus, in order to gain the precious possession of peace of heart, mind and soul, it is extremely important for one to do Zikr of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'aala).
The word Zikr is used in several contexts, like remembrance of Allah (swt) and reading of the Holy Quran, etc. Our purpose here is to discuss the importance of Zikr as the remembrance of Allah. The significance of doing Zikr is blatantly stated both in the Holy Quran and Ahadiis of the Prophet (saw). Hence, the one who does Zikr of his Khaaliq or Creator with abundance, Allah provides him with more and more opportunities to perform good deeds and make the pathway of Islam easier to follow. Above all the numerous benefits, the greatest one is the Ma'arfat of and closeness to Allah that is also achieved as a result of doing Zikr. The real reason behind Salah (prayers) too is the remembrance of Allah. One is obliged to perform it with full concentration and attentiveness, keeping in mind that he is standing in front of Allah. If a person does not pray Salah with concentration and availability of heart, his Salah will not be complete. That's why in order to perform Salah in the right manner; one has to be present both with the heart and mind. The weapon of a Mo'min in the battle against Devil (shaitaan) is Zikr. The Qur'an says that when the people of taqwa come under attack by the bands of shayateen they do Zikr of Allah and thus, save themselves from their plots and from indulging in sins.
